About This Tour

This private day trip covers two places in Kent: the city of Canterbury and the White Cliffs of Dover. A MisterFare driver collects you in London, drives you to both, waits between stops and brings you back the same evening.

Canterbury is about one hour forty-five minutes from central London by road. The cathedral is the mother church of the Church of England and the place where Thomas Becket was killed in 1170. Visitors enter the precincts through Christ Church Gate. A sightseeing ticket is needed; it is sold online or at the visitor centre, and at the time of writing costs £18 from October to March. Children aged 17 and under go free with a paying adult, up to two per adult.

The medieval city centre around the cathedral is compact and largely pedestrianised, so you can walk to shops and cafés for lunch before rejoining the car.

The White Cliffs visitor centre at Langdon Cliffs, run by the National Trust, is about 30 to 40 minutes from Canterbury. From there a way-marked path runs along the clifftop with views over the Port of Dover and, on clear days, towards France. South Foreland Lighthouse is about two miles along the path, roughly 90 minutes each way with stops, so most day visitors walk part of the route and return.

The driver is not a guide.

Approximate plan for the day

  • Pickup in London — Collection from your London address or hotel.
  • Drive to Canterbury — Via the A2 and M2.
  • Canterbury Cathedral and city centre — Self-guided cathedral visit with your own ticket, then time for lunch in the city centre.
  • Drive to the White Cliffs of Dover — About 17 miles via the A2.
  • White Cliffs of Dover, Langdon Cliffs — Clifftop walk from the National Trust visitor centre; café and toilets on site.
  • Return to London — Via the A20/M20 or A2/M2, depending on traffic.

Timings are agreed with you when the booking is confirmed and depend on traffic and your chosen ticket times.

Accessibility and walking

Canterbury Cathedral has step-free routes to much of the building, but some areas have steps. The White Cliffs visitor centre has toilets and a café; the clifftop paths are uneven, grassy and chalky, with gradients, and are not suitable for wheelchairs beyond the area near the visitor centre. Check with each venue. Walking level: moderate.
